Many times patients let me know that they would really rather not “take a pill” for their health issues. I completely understand! I too would rather not take a conventional medication, or anything at all, if at all possible. But then again, what if there is a way to “take a pill” with a different intention...the intention to heal, rather then to cover up symptoms.
As the daughter of a pharmacist, I grew up surrounded by the business of “taking pills.” In fact, I often joke that the pharmacy stores in various locations seemed more like “home” to me because my family moved towns every 2 to 4 years as my father was promoted as a leader in the company. One might think that I would be more likely to take prescription medications as a result.
Actually, it is quite the opposite! At a young age I learned that there are many ways to avoid the need for “pills,” including healthy diet choices and exercise. As such, it is not a surprise that I sought out training as a nutritionist, exercise instructor and then naturopathic doctor as my profession.
I have a high respect for the use of prescription medications when necessary, and at the same time, a clear and absolute knowing that it is possible to prevent the need for those medications with careful attention to underlying causes and the use of less invasive therapies.
While in naturopathic medical school, while I was quite hesitant to take even pills that were natural-based (herbs, nutrients, etc), it became clear to me that a different sort of “pill” exists; A pill with the intention of healing...of supporting the body to heal itself...not just taking over for the body.
For example, instead of using a birth control pill (synthetic hormones) to take over for the ovaries in order to avoid menstrual cramps or to regulate an irregular menstrual cycle, using a natural therapy, like chaste tree berry, to stimulate the ovaries to ovulate and thus make progesterone, which helps to decrease cramps and regulate the cycle.
That is naturopathic medicine to me; discovering the natural therapy that will support each person’s body to function better on its own, leading to better overall health in the short and long run.
Now, after 11 years in practice, I have seen over and over again that this other sort of “pill,” a natural pill with a healing philosophy behind it, actually IS effective and CAN not only prevent the need for prescription medications (with their associated side effects), but also prevent health issues.
This is not to say that natural therapies don’t have the potential for untoward effects. My body happens to be quite sensitive to “pills” of all sorts. I remember once, after taking an herbal pill that was intended to support my liver and thus decrease menstrual cramps, I ended up in the bathroom for the rest of day (I’ll spare you the details!). Needless to say, that wasn’t the right remedy for my body (at least at that time).
We are individuals, not just due to personality and background, but because we each have a very unique set of genes (which adapt to our environment and stresses) that determine our predispositions at any point in time.
My job, as a naturopathic doctor, is to help you to understand your body and to offer you information about the “natural pills” that could potentially support your body to heal and to function optimally day to day. Your body will let us know when we find the right match...because you will feel better!
One of the key factors in healing, I find, is for you to know that, when you swallow a “natural pill,” it is with the purpose of supporting your body to heal. The other key factor is for you to know that it is possible for your body to heal.
With this understanding, I truly believe that optimal health is possible.
