Meet Dr. Doni

<!–

…Looking back on what Dr. Doni has helped me with, for one, my body and my moods are far more balanced now. I no longer need pharmaceutical drugs to be healthy. As a matter of fact, I am now healthier without them.

Secondly, I have learned (and perhaps this is most important) to be more aware of myself and my body and what it is telling me. For example, I am now aware when I’m low on fuel (food) because my health or my mood reverts to a less-than-optimal state.

Finally, I’m a healthier individual. I am learning to rely on healthy food and activity. Not because I know it’s important to my health (I always knew that!), but because I know how good I feel when I do.

All in all, can I say that working with you saved my marriage? That maybe it saved me? Perhaps it even helped me get (and stay) pregnant when my friends were stressed and imbalanced and struggled to do so. It sounds amazing but it is all true!!!!

Since finding Dr. Doni I’ve made many changes in my life and have continually searched for ways to better health and balance. She’s been an inspiration and the first person I contact when I have a health concern.

Meet Dr. Donielle (Doni) Wilson, Naturopathic Doctor

Doni and EllaDr. Donielle Wilson’s professional credentials as a wellness health expert include a doctorate in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University (one of only seven recognized and accredited naturopathic medical colleges in North America) and certification as a professional midwife and doula.

She also holds a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and a bachelor’s in science from Oregon State University.

As a resident in general naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University, Dr. Doni focused her training and research on women’s health issues, specifically menopause and natural hormones.  In addition, she completed an integrative gynecology internship with experts in the field.

Dr. Wilson is licensed to practice naturopathic medicine in both Connecticut and Washington State. She is certifed as a nutrition specialist (CNS).

Dr. Doni took part in two separate midwifery preceptorships (Seattle, WA and Manila, Philippines) and has completed research on fear and stress associated with childbirth in women with a history of abuse.  She qualified as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) in 2000 and maintains that certification.

When she moved to the Tri-State area in 2001, Dr. Doni practiced for 6 years in a busy naturopathic clinic specializing in environmental and food allergies where she developed her specialized approach to food intolerances and “eating for health” as she calls it.

During that same time Dr. Doni completed research and began offering trainings for other professionals on the impact of stress and the use of nutrients and herbs to balance neurotransmitter levels, thus making life-changing differences in health conditions such as Depression, Anxiety, PMDD, Insomnia and many more.

In 2008, Dr. Doni created her own practice, based on the approach she developed which starts by looking at how stress impacts health in each person’s body. In this way, she has become an expert in hormone and neurotransmitter balancing, as well as gluten intolerance, chronic digestive issues and immune system disorders, such as autoimmunity (Dr. Doni is a sought-after expert in natural therapies for Behcet’s Disease) and cancer.

She uses her background in women’s health to help women with hormone imbalances, menstrual irregularities, cervical dysplasia, difficulty conceiving and recurrent infections. She has completed numerous seminars including those on Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome and functional medicine in general.

Dr. Doni created The Hamptons Cleanse and a gluten free website, GlutenFreeQuest.com, in 2008 as a starting place for patients to implement change in their health.

In June 2009 Dr. Doni published the article “It all Begins with Stress” in the Integrative Medicine Journal.

Most recently, while maintaining a full practice in three locations (Manhattan, Stamford, CT, and Port Jefferson, NY), Dr. Doni’s continued research led her to look for connections between food intolerances and neurotransmitter imbalances, which has now become a cutting-edge area of investigation.  Dr. Doni presented on Gluten Intolerance and Depression at the Integrative Health Symposium in February 2010.

In 2012, Dr. Doni’s research on stress and the adrenal response (cortisol and adrenaline) was accepted and presented at the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians Annual Conference, as well as at the Association for the Advancement of Restorative Medicine (AARM) Conference.  She received an award for her research from AARM.

Dr. Doni is president and executive director of the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians (NYANP) and has held that position since April 2003. In addition to running the NYANP, she spearheads the effort to license Naturopathic Doctors in New York and is one of the largest individual donors to that effort.  She served as a board member for the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and the American Association of Naturopathic Midwives.

Dr. Doni sits on the following advisory boards:
Cinco Vidas, a blog on cancer care and avoiding toxins
Easy Eats Magazine, a gluten-free food and lifestyle magazine
Innovative Nutrition, a nutrition and supplement store
Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists (CBNS)

She is a member of the following organizations:
American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP)
New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians (NYANP)
Connecticut Naturopathic Physicians Association (CNPA)
American Association of Naturopathic Midwives (AANM)
Pediatric Association of Naturopathic Physicians (PEDANP)
Association for the Advancement of Restorative Medicine (AARM)

In 2004, Dr. Doni was awarded the NYANP Naturopathic Doctor of the Year award.  She is often called upon to publicly speak at both professional and public events, and is regularly quoted in the media (Click to see examples).

Personal Journey to Helping Patients Heal

Dr. Doni’s signature system for creating wellness is built on sound eating and healthy living principles she began cultivating as a young girl.  Her father worked as a pharmacist and taught her that pills or medications were not the answer to true health.  He instead showed her the value of first honoring her body’s need for healthy, considerate care, including choosing foods that support health.

She now bases her medical philosophy on this principle.  Dr. Doni faithfully follows the naturopathic mantra to “first, do no harm.”  She approaches the medical care of her patients with gentle investigation and designs treatment plans that honor the inherent healing power of the body.

Dr. Doni enjoys sharing these same ways of understanding the body with her eight-year-old daughter, Ella.  Ella was born at home, knows homeopathic and herbal remedies as her “medicine,” and eats gluten-free.

A Life-Enhancing Approach to Healing

Dr. Doni is unique as a healer in her ability to recognize the unlimited potential women’s bodies hold.  As a naturopathic doctor, she is accomplished in the art of collaborative treatment.  Not only does she unite the best practices from Western medicine with ancient healing arts, she also connects her patients’ needs for professional medical guidance with empowering knowledge.

The attentiveness present in Dr. Doni’s standard of care is what makes her services distinctive.  Her training in natural health principles extends beyond traditional guidelines and allows her to engage her patients on a personal level.  She teaches her patients to listen to the wisdom of their own bodies in order to find lasting wholeness and pleasure.

After working with Dr. Doni, you’ll certainly walk away with relief from your initial ailments.  On top of that, you’ll experience transformative wellness that reconnects you to the most basic pleasures in life – like having the energy to play with your children or the tranquility that brings you a fulfilling full-night’s rest.

She Understands Problems Because She’s Faced Them Too

Dr. Doni has faced and overcome her own health challenges which has fueled her passion for natural health and deepened her compassion for patients struggling with mysterious symptoms and recurring health problems.

She faced years of allergies, debilitating migraines, fatigue and chronic severe PMS symptoms. It wasn’t until she tested her neurotransmitter functioning and upgraded her nutrition to a gluten and dairy-free diet that she was able to completely heal her body.

Dr. Doni not only speaks from sound training and experience, but also from living what she practices. She enjoys sharing her personal insights on making diet and lifestyle changes work.
