With a Busy Schedule, How to Add Something New?

I just received the latest issue of Easy Eats Magazine where they published my answer to the question:

"With a busy schedule how do you add something new and still maintain a healthy balance in your life?"

Here is my answer, as published...

Patients often ask me: "how can I make it look so easy to be healthy?"  

Actually with a busy practice, daughter, pets and running a non-profit organization, I don't have a choice but to make healthy choices in every moment, or else I couldn't possibly keep up! 

When I want to add sometime new, I think about how I can fit it into my usual routine in a way that requires the least effort - I call them "snippets."  

If it is about remembering to take a product to help calm my mind before going to bed, then I put that bottle near my tooth brush, which I use every night before bed.  When I wanted to start taking fish oil every morning, I put the bottle in the fridge next to my favorite berry extract that I love to have in my morning shake.  

Because I know that I keep my energy and metabolism going by eating protein every 3-4 hours, I keep almond butter packets and protein bars in my bag every where I go.  When sorting out my gym schedule, I match it up with my daughter's gymnastics schedule so I can go to the gym (next door) after I drop her off.  

The something new that has me stumped is the product to help with memory!  I think I'll try putting it next to the dark chocolate.  : )

The hardest part of getting to healthy: Road Map to Wellness

Sometimes the hardest part of getting to "feeling good" is keeping with it. 

What is hard...

• There is the out of pocket expense
• Being tempted by foods that throw your system off track
• Keeping up with shopping for food, sleep and exercise considering all of life's demands
• Figuring out where to begin and finding a practitioner/partner to help you

But I find, beyond those things, what seems to challenge patients most is knowing where they are in the process of getting to "feeling good," or your optimum health.   

That's why I'm writing a book...

So that you will have the understanding of how your body works (and how it gets off track), awareness of what is happening in your body, and steps to help you along the path of supporting your body.  

This way you'll have a road map, so to speak...that shows you where you are, how you got there and where you are going!

Yesterday a patient who has diabetes told me about how much better she is feeling...

"If it hadn't been for you, I would still be floundering the way I was.  You helped me turn my health around.  Last week at my appointment, my endocrinologist said 'whatever you are doing, keep going, don't stop, because your lab results look so much better.  I didn't know it was possible!'  ... I'm so happy that it is possible - thanks to you!"  

And I know that each of you can achieve progress toward feeling better and preventing health issues.  

So if you feel like you're staggering, drifting...or ready to go to the next level when it comes to improving your health...

Here are a few possible ways to help while I'm writing the book (creating the map): 

1. Reboot: Perhaps a 1-3 week Hamptons Cleanse will help you get back on track or take the next steps.

2. Reset: Meet with me for an initial Breakthrough Session to make a plan to reset your health.

3. Revisit: Is it time for a 3 or 6 month check in by phone?

4. Realign: Let's schedule 4 fifteen minute phone sessions (to be used over time as you need them) so I can help you along the way.  

There is no "right" way or "final" step when it comes to attaining wellness.  I find that it is a process individual to each person, and constantly shifting based on stress, time and priorities. 

We can strategize and plan, then learn how your body responds and reassess.  That's the key to wellness...continually connecting with your body, finding out what it needs (and doesn't need) and finding a way to provide it.

What to do about Bug Repellent and Sun Screen?

As we get ready to send our precious kids and selves out into the summer sun and outdoors, it's important to find 
products that protect without being toxic. 

Keep in mind that anything that you put on your skin can be absorbed into your body. Chemicals and 
hormone-disrupting substances in lotions and sprays will be able to get into your blood and throw your 
immune and endocrine (hormone) systems off track.

Of course it is important to prevent sunburns and insect bites, so we do need good solutions for summertime play.

Simple Strategies for Fun in the Sun: 
1. Wear a hat, shirt, loose pants, and/or sunglasses.
2. Keep your "time in the sun" to under 15 minutes at a time, and early or late in the day.
3. Use plants that are natural bug repellents (Citronella). See this post for lots of ideas!
4. Check for ticks after spending time outdoors.

My tips for finding products you can trust:
1. Avoid the ingredients listed at CincoVidas.com including parabens, chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, 
benzophenone-3, and octyl methoxycinnamate), synthetic fragrance and propylene glycol.
2. Choose sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Here is a great example by Caribbean Solutions.
3. Look for bug repellents that are chemical-free.  I found a couple options that I'm excited to try: 
* Garlic-based product for yard
* Buzz Away Extreme repellent
